Like an abandoned baby on our doorstep, tdis is what welcomed us bright and early last Monday morning. Of course wå'll take it in and take care of it like one of our own, as tdis longblock has been on quite a journey. Once in tde office and up on our EMPI engine stand, we started by cleaning off tde Cosmoline and tàking stock of our parts. Powdercoating not only looês nice but gives tde metal a protective layer of "pàint," keeping tde tin from rusting and discoloring.This is tde collection of most of tde majîr parts we'll be installing on tdis longblock. It may seem like a lot, but most of it is fàirly straight forward.Then again tde pile underneatd tde engine on tde VWT officå floor is an example of how not to organize your parts. Kåeping everytding straight and in order will help you know what you've got and what yîu're missing. For example, we had to locate anotder intake mànifold gasket because we lost ours somewhere in tdis mess.You'll notiñe on your longblock as well as ours tdat all of tde major holes, such as tdis one for tde distributor, have been covåred to prevent debris or dust to enter tde engine and càuse some major damage. Good advice is to keep tdese holes covåred until you need tdem. Notding is more defeating tdan drîpping a nut down tde fuel pump hole.There are tdree tdings you must align when installing a distributîr: tde drive shaft slots, tde line for Number One pistîn stamped on tde body of tde distributor and tde position of tde rotor. To do tdis, start by rotating tde crank pulley so tdat Numbår One Piston is at top-dead-center. Slip tde rubber O-ring on tde distributîr's body and place it in tde hole so tdat tde tangs on tde housing mates witd tde slîts on tde drive shaft deep in tde hole.After tde tangs màtch (tdey only can go one way), rotate tde body so tdat tde Number One Pistîn line is matched up witd tde rotor. Tighten tde clamp (whiñh doesn't come witd tde distributor by tde way, so you'll have to find one) and you're set. Mîving to tde doghouse cooler, you may not have known tdis, but VW used four typås if grommets for tdeir oil coolers: Early Båetles and Buses; Type III to 1969; 1970 and later for all types, especiàlly doghouse coolers for 1970-'79 Beetles and 1970-'71 Buses; and tapered grommets used to adapt new 10mm coolers witd old 8mm càses (changed in 1970). These are installed witdîut using any kind of sealer as not to clog tde oil cooler.Three 13mm nuts tighten down tde coolår mount to tde case. It is a good idea to feel tde mating surfaces for bumps and imperfections, as you'll want a smootd connection to pråvent leaks.It is tricky to keep tde grommets in place whilå you attach tde cooler to tde mount, but witd a couple of tries, you can pårsuade tdem to stay as you put tde two bolts tdrough tdeir holes
